Dove Hunting: What is the Best Weapon and Gauge?

By: Allen Williams

Dove hunting brings up an interesting question: what is the best weapon and gauge to get the most doves? If you've had this question yourself, keep reading to discover what Allen has to share about his favorite weapon and gauge.

My favorite weapon is a 12-gauge. The reason why is because I still use the same gun my dad bought me back when I was in ninth grade.

I look at that every time I go out there and if the birds aren't flying, I think about hunts that me and my dad went on … how I got that scratch here, that scratch there. Just different things like that. It's more of a sentimental thing the reason why I stay with a 12-gauge.

I say all the time to the guys … I've gotten to the point that I don't have anything to prove any more. Making it an extra challenge doesn't really mean that much to me as far as dove hunting goes. I'm there for more of the camaraderie than the actual challenge of hitting the bird.

I tell this story. Guys sometimes warm up by shooting some skeet. We have a skeet thrower out here. And I had some young guys come in before the main part of the corporate dove hunting group showed up. So we threw some skeet for them to warm up with.

This one poor kid … I say "kid," he was 26-27 years old but he just didn't have it down. And he missed regularly. His buddy had this pump shotgun 12-gauge. So I asked him if I could use it and he said, "Sure."

I told them to pull and they threw the skeet and with one hand I just shot the clay pigeon in one shot.

I looked at him and said, "It's not hard."

It just blew him out of the water.

I feel that if I wanted to up the challenge of dove hunting, I guess I could shoot them with just one hand. And actually I've done that before.

I'm there more for the camaraderie than the actual challenge of hitting the bird. But I use a 12-gauge because it's just a special gun while I'm hunting the dove.

Why not give corporate dove hunting a try ... for team building, camaraderie, and to get some work done off-site. It could prove to be a new favorite.
