- Planted 150,000 pounds of lespedeza on 15,100 acres.
- Planted over 768,000 miles of wildlife food plots.
- Planted over 381,000 trees and shrubs through wildlife projects.
- Conducted prescribed burning on over 311,000 acres.
- Purchased, rented or maintained 962 pieces of equipment for habitat development.
- Developed or maintained 1,538 wildlife watering sites.
- Sponsored 2,377 youth activities, projects, camps, etc.
- Reached over one million youth with activities such as habitat projects, hunter
education, conservation programs, scholarships, school events and youth groups.
- Sponsored 92 landowner/farmer events attended by over 6,200 people.
- Sponsored 159 research projects nationally.
- Conducted 436 wildlife surveys in cooperation with state and federal wildlife agencies.
- Improved over 42,700 acres of habitat through conservation mowing, spraying,
discing and brush management.
- Purchased 346 tons of fertilizer for wildlife plantings.
- Paid for over 3,900 hours of contract labor.
The Dove Sportsman's Society and Quail Unlimited address the habitat problems of dove
and quail through its network of grassroots chapters. Dove Sportsman's Society chapters raise funds in
their local communities, then fund projects that will have the greatest impact
on dove, quail, upland game birds and other wildlife species. Dove Sportsman's Society chapter
projects include habitat management, research, youth programs, and informational
and educational programs. In addition to helping targeted wildlife species, Dove Sportsman's Society
chapter projects also benefit deer, turkey, rabbits, song birds and a host
of other species. Funds raised by dove chapters may be used to provide more dove
hunting opportunities in the chapter's local areas. Funds could also be used for
youth dove shoots, public dove fields, dove research projects or in association
with the chapter's state wildlife agency.
Dove Sportsman's Society and Quail Unlimited programs are making a positive impact at all
levels, from local to national. Dove Sportsman's Society and Quail Unlimited members in over 400 chapters across the
country support and actively participate in habitat improvement, education and
research projects. Funds raised by Dove Sportsman's Society and Quail Unlimited chapters are ear-marked for local habitat
and educational projects, state wildlife departments, upland game bird
management, habitat research and education programs.
Despite a growing awareness of the importance of
preserving and improving upland game habitat, more and more of this habitat is
lost each year. In addition, severe seasonal weather conditions such as drought
and extreme cold can decimate upland bird populations. Much more scientific
research is needed for us to better understand the habitat needs of dove, quail and
other upland game birds, their dynamic relationships with other species, and the
most effective and beneficial habitat management techniques and programs.
